Important Updates to Psychology Practice Standards in Australia

From 1 December 2025, the Psychology Board of Australia is introducing new national standards that guide how all psychologists practise. These changes are designed to improve the quality, safety, and cultural responsiveness of psychological care across Australia.

1. New Code of Conduct for Psychologists

A new Code of Conduct sets clearer expectations for safe, respectful, and ethical psychological care.
It strengthens standards in:

  • Cultural safety (including better support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples)

  • Professional boundaries

  • Communication, consent, and confidentiality

  • Safe and effective service delivery across all settings, including online care

This ensures psychologists nationwide follow consistent, high-quality professional standards.

2. Ongoing Commitment to Safety and Ethics

Psychologists are now expected to maintain stronger awareness and training in areas such as:

  • Responding safely to family, domestic and sexual violence

  • Working respectfully across diverse cultural and social backgrounds

  • Maintaining safer, clearer professional boundaries

These expectations further reinforce trust, respect, and safety in the therapeutic relationship.

What This Means for You

As a client, you can expect:

  • Higher standards of professional practice

  • More culturally informed and inclusive care

  • Enhanced safety in both in-person and online sessions

  • Improved training and oversight for early-career psychologists

  • Greater clarity about what to expect from your psychologist

These changes are designed to strengthen the quality of psychological care across Australia.
